genres

genres are about repetition an difference

popular genres rely audiences to feel this. spec=how and why they are created, change, andure and decline.

Neale argues that genre is a processs by which generic codes and conventions are shared by producers and audiences through repetition in media products.

this means that genres are not fixed but constantly evolve.

3 conventions:

  • Iconography -things we can see; costume, mise en scene, editing
  • structure -how the familiar stories come about that tend to repeat itself (rise and fall in gangster movies)
  • theme -messages and values presented
Iconography for..
The western= cowboys, deserted areas, horses, rattlesnakes and guns
Vampire horror= dark cave looking castle/building, blood, pale vampires, gloomy settings

the western= cowboys on a mission to find what they're looking for or escaping from then end up accomplishing this; through numerous hurdles.
Vampire horror=old vampires on the hunt for fresh young blood..manipulate or kidnap humans then suck their blood.

1st stage- primitive, the formative stage in which the genres characteristics are first established.

2nd stage- the classical, genre at it's peak, with generic qualitites refined.

3rd stage- revisionist, which reevaluates it often in a critical way..typifies the genre

4th stage- the parodic, in which the genre is satirized in a consciously self-reflexive, tongue-in-cheek manner.

1950s
genre Theorist- Andrew Tudor "a genre ..defines a moral and social world"
