Bandura study- bobo doll and kids reacting to it
albert bandura chose to study aggression..watching violence reduces aggression, was this true?
experimented on small kids 3-5..what the children saw they did. experiment took place as tv was introduced. done another experiment of kids watching an adult hit the bobo doll and the children mirrored that behaviour.. therefore meaning children are influenced to copy what they watch on tv.

High frequency of viewers of television are more likely to be influenced through the media. The more we watch it the more influenced we are...over a period of time.
Desensitisation- the more negative news we feed into becomes the expectancy.
media sees the audience as PASSIVE-conforming to news given to them.

Pastiche- celebrating and presenting traditional genres. For example Quentin Tarantino movies and Easy A
Parody- making fun of a version
Illustrated Case Study:-Romantic Comedy
Romantic comedies Usually revolve around the idea of a couple that are distressed, loney and ultimately end up with each other. However after battling numerous obstacles such as trust issues, in denial or insecurities.
Iconography for romantic comedy movie:
The typical setting for Romcoms would be in restaurants with dim lighting, gyms, cottages, the beach and or other environments that would allow two people to fall in love such as the typical City stories like 'Pretty Woman'
Primitive: This is the first stage that establishes the traditional genre and characters. For example it's usually set in a laid back or humorous setting for example the first scene of '10 things I hate about you' opens up with high school girls enjoying their music in their car on the way to school, then introducing Kat a more stronger opinionated female who we as the audience can tell she'll eventually fall in love.
2nd stage-the classical- this stage is where the movie is at it's peak of the genre, conforming to qualities that are of the regular romcom. such as in the movie 'Clueless' when Cher falls in love with the typical, masculine new student Christian. This leads to our expectations of the girl in distress falling in love with the boy. perhaps just based on lust and looks.
3rd stage-revionist- At this stage the genre is scrutinesed and critically changed to make it unexpected. For example in the movie 'Pretty Woman'

newspapers and politics
Press Freedom-in the Uk the press is Free and believe this is the fundamental to a democrartc society. nevertheless everyone's entitled to free speech and an opinion, hence why newspapers may be biased or have certain strong views based on the journalist.
disadvantages of free press- they're abusing people's privacy (phone hacking scandal)
manipulating people leading to hatred
left wing- labour party..progressive and aim to support those who can't support themselves, believe in taxes to redistribute it equally to the government such as paying tax to the nhs and education. protecting women, gay people and ethnic minorities. also the green party is left wing. they believe in taxing rich people more. Government should be involved in helping us.
right wing- conservative, UKIP. (WANTING TO SEPERATE FROM THE EU). They value traditional, survival of the fittest and they believe in economic freedom. we should be more independent. Government should stay out of our business.

genres
genres are about repetition an difference
popular genres rely audiences to feel this. spec=how and why they are created, change, andure and decline.
Neale argues that genre is a processs by which generic codes and conventions are shared by producers and audiences through repetition in media products.
this means that genres are not fixed but constantly evolve.
3 conventions:
- Iconography -things we can see; costume, mise en scene, editing
- structure -how the familiar stories come about that tend to repeat itself (rise and fall in gangster movies)
- theme -messages and values presented
Iconography for..
The western= cowboys, deserted areas, horses, rattlesnakes and guns
Vampire horror= dark cave looking castle/building, blood, pale vampires, gloomy settings
Sci Fi= flying transportation, abnormal creatures (deformed or supernatural), magical wands
structure for..
the western= cowboys on a mission to find what they're looking for or escaping from then end up accomplishing this; through numerous hurdles.
Vampire horror=old vampires on the hunt for fresh young blood..manipulate or kidnap humans then suck their blood.
Sci fi= aliens invading then a soon war between the two species in order to save the universe
Theme for...
The western= Action (aggressive and defending themselves in tough situations). Justifying white settlers taking over now america from who they called "savages"-native americans
Vampire horror=be aware of our needs and perhaps sexuality
sci fi= protect each other from an overall evilness
The Teen Movie

'rite of passage' narrative- moving from one social identity to another (child to adult).
The need to belong to a group..importance of popularity
1st stage- primitive, the formative stage in which the genres characteristics are first established.
2nd stage- the classical, genre at it's peak, with generic qualitites refined.
3rd stage- revisionist, which reevaluates it often in a critical way..typifies the genre
4th stage- the parodic, in which the genre is satirized in a consciously self-reflexive, tongue-in-cheek manner.
1950s
genre Theorist- Andrew Tudor "a genre ..defines a moral and social world"
stanley hall identified teens as "adolescence"
The Great Depression- focused on the importance of kids getting an education ...meaning in the 50s kids no longer could work and had to stay in school. However after the war and money was no longer needed, they had stayed in school in order to develop and build what they want to achieve. Heavily targeted by teenagers..teens loyal to the cinema
more movies that target young people.
times have changed causing teens to stay at home
the new concept of 'teenagers' had society scare

online newspapers
advantages of Online newspapers: Daily mail they were immediate and regularly being updated as we can see the time near the stories. People are aware of what's going on constantly. However The Guardian is more evidential and abvious to see
social media allows writers of the blogs to reach a wider audience by constantly tweeting, this again allows the general public to stay updated with world news.
Online websites are good in interacting with the modern audience and visually presenting it in a more enjoyable and quick way to get information. pay walls which some newspapers have meaning people have to subscribe. people are able to comment on articles
as most people are use to their phones and things coming quick.
Even apps are being developed from certain newspapers such as daily mail which is again aimed at a more younger and modern audience. However the app for daily mail is more celebrity focused.
An archive facility that allows people to access back issues is good as it allows people to look into stories if missed.
Both newspapers have archives meaning you can go back to old stories .
Daily mails twitter is more celebrity based and not as political.
however The guardian covers same content
